The word “conscience” literally means “knowing with.” The conscience “knows with” while standing apart from and outside normal self-dialog, overhearing a person’s deepest thoughts, and witnessing deeds despite attempts to limit self-disclosure.
A striking feature of the Terry Schiavo case has been the diminished compassion the nation now shows for the weak and the helpless. Could it be that increasingly radical calls for more and more extremist abortion policies have affected the national character?
