Did you hear the one about the “shotgun wedding” involving a same-sex couple?

gay shotgun wedding

Me neither. That’s because it never happened — and it never will — and there’s a reason for that …

When a man and a woman come together in marriage, they consummate a union that creates a “third thing.” When gays and lesbians “marry,” they claim to also create a “third thing.” The fundamental inequality of those “third things” is the reason we will never see a same-sex “shotgun wedding.”

Since no one argues that a gay man and a lesbian woman have no right to marry each other in the same way that straights do, the “gay vs. straight” marriage controversy cannot be about the equality of individuals, but rather is about the equality of the “third things” created in their differing unions.

The fact that those “third things” are not the same is empirically verifiable in that same-sex marriages …

  • Cannot be consummated.
  • Are not by design procreative.
  • Do not channel male sexual energy to the benefit of women and children the way traditional marriages do.
  • Are ill-suited to the production of well-adjusted children needed to perpetuate society.
  • Are antithetical, indifferent, or even hostile to the foundational social roles of father, mother, wife, and husband.
  • Are unable to make compelling claims on society’s resources and conscience for their preservation and expansion the way traditional marriages do.
  • By their very existence disrupt or negate the positive social dynamics inherent in traditional marriages.
  • Inhibit the socialization of males and females toward traditional norms.
  • Etc.

Before the Supreme Court’s 26 June 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, et al, marriages in America …

  • Could be consummated.
  • Were by design procreative.
  • Channeled male sexual energy to the benefit of women and children.
  • Were well-suited to the production of well-adjusted children needed to perpetuate society.
  • Supportive of, dependent on, and friendly toward the foundational social roles of father, mother, wife, and husband.
  • Were able to make compelling claims on society’s resources and conscience for their preservation and expansion.
  • Manifested the positive social dynamics inherent in traditional marriages.
  • Fostered the socialization of males and females toward traditional norms.
  • Etc.

In response to alleged animus and under the guise of equal protection for individuals. the Supreme Court mandated “equal protection,” not for individuals, but for differing “third things” that are inherently unequal. Indeed, the very need to redefine marriage to include same-sex unions makes the inequality of same-sex “third things” patently obvious.

Truth is similarity between same-sex and traditional marriage is limited strictly to the arena of romance — sexual/emotional intimacy. Even there though, the difference is significant, with traditional marriage eschewing the waning of romance as a basis for breaking the union.

All of the above point to a difference in the being/substance of same-sex marriages that falsifies their alleged equality with traditional marriage.

All of the above is also illuminated by comparing same-sex marriage with the marriage of slaves.

Historically, interracial and slave marriages were deprecated based on the inferiority of Blacks over against whites. The “third things” created in Black marriages were allegedly inferior to the “third things” created by non-Black marriages. Black marriages were thus deemed to be separate and unequal relative to the marriages of non-Blacks. Three responses were possible:

  • Yes, Black marriages are separate and unequal — the position of pro-slavery partisans.
  • No, Black marriages are neither separate nor unequal — the position of abolitionists.
  • No, Black marriages are separate BUT equal — a middle-ground position.

Gay activists have the same options on same-sex marriage:

  • Same-sex unions are separate and unequal — the conservative position for rejecting same-sex marriage — no need for redefinition of marriage.
  • Same-sex unions are neither separate nor unequal — the gay-activist position — true only if marriage is reduced to sexual/emotional intimacy — see above.
  • Same-sex unions are separate BUT equal — an argument for civil unions — preserves the traditional definition of marriage — recognizes some similarity to traditional marriage while siding in favor of the overwhelming differences.

The second and third options are highly problematic if “equality” goes beyond romance.

An analogy with table salt clarifies. In chemistry (traditional ethics), sodium (a man) and chlorine (a woman) come together to form salt (a marriage).

comparison of marriages with table salt

Extending that analogy to same-sex marriage, it cannot be the case that two atoms of sodium (two men) or two atoms of chlorine (two women) can come together to form a molecule of salt (a marriage). If the “third thing” (salt) created in same-sex marriage is really equal to the “third thing” (salt) in traditional marriage, then homosexual men and women cannot have the same natures as traditional men and women.

Of course we can’t produce table salt without sodium and chlorine; but regardless of whether we indulge that fantasy, we have a huge disconnect in comparing the experience of gays under a regime of traditional marriage with that of Blacks under a regime of slavery in that the two movements fought/fight for different outcomes.

The whole Civil Rights Movement was about Blacks having a common nature with whites, with a common ethic for all.

The Gay Rights Movement, in contrast, is about homosexuals having a differing nature from heterosexuals, with differing ethics for each.

But unlike same-sex marriages, Black marriages …

  • Can be consummated.
  • Are by design procreative.
  • Do channel male sexual energy to the benefit of women and children the way traditional marriages do.
  • Are well-suited to the production of well-adjusted children needed to perpetuate society.
  • Supportive of, dependent on, and friendly toward the foundational social roles of father, mother, wife, and husband.
  • Are able to make compelling claims on society’s resources and conscience for their preservation and expansion the way traditional marriages do.
  • Manifest the positive social dynamics inherent in traditional marriages.
  • Foster the socialization of males and females toward traditional norms.
  • Etc.

None of those things are true of same-sex marriage. The faddish equation of the Gay Rights Movement with the Civil Rights Movement is just plain faulty.

Moreover, absence of motive for a same-sex “shotgun” wedding bears compelling witness to the fundamental inferiority of the “third things” created in gay marriages. Truth is traditional marriage is imbued with value to the extent that in many times and places people have sought to attain its social goods by forcing the marriage of particular individuals. No such thing is true (or will ever be true) of any gay marriage.

The Wild West was wild until traditional marriage became the norm. Gay marriage could never have accomplished such a thing. To believe that gay marriage is equal to traditional marriage, one has to also believe the institution of marriage could have just as easily have arisen among gays, and from there, spread to heterosexuals as vice versa. Truth is traditional marriage necessarily precedes gay marriage, the same way the idea of real money necessarily precedes the idea of play money. Same-sex marriage does not equal traditional marriage — it mocks it.

  1. Rafael says:

That is an awesome post. It’s all the argument needed to convince and or dismantle any support on gay, lesbian, and same sex marriage. It will certainly prove that if upon reading this post anyone still holds to a belief in support of, they are either delusional or just completely against any moral stance on this and certainly GOD’S plan for mankind for the good of all. Nothing other than the traditional works as described in the post which does not allow for the alternative. Thanks!
